Family Theatre Workshop: Fun with Fairy Tales
LAC Drama Staff
Spend Saturdays with your kids and drama faculty members including Elizabeth Sullivan, Erin Girard, Ric Averill and others! This parent-child class will give preschoolers and kindergartners wonderful exposure to acting in a very safe environment. The group will act out fairy tales, songs and simple stories with their parents as partners and fellow actors. Lots of fun!

Curtain’s Up!

Come join us for eight weeks of fun exploring the world of theatre. Children will learn basic acting techniques through the use of theatre games and exercises, improvisation, and story-playing or “acting out” of a tale or two.

This 10-week class takes students with any level of experience and prepares them for the next step as actors — in First Saturday Players, at school or even in Summer Youth Theatre. Actors will do improvisation, play theatre games and act out stories with complex plots and characterization.

Want to write a play? A movie? Bring in existing work or start a new project, writing a short play or screenplay. Published playwright and produced screenwriter Ric Averill will guide students through the process of moving from page to stage, from concept to camera.

Improvisation I
Elizabeth Sullivan
Actress Elizabeth Sullivan will work with students on improvisation, one of the keys to successful acting. Students will do acting exercises designed to expand the imagination and help to come up with dialogue through exploring conflict and character. This fun Friday class is a great compliment to participation in plays and other acting and dancing classes at the Arts Center.

Improvisation II

For previously enrolled students as well as new ones. If the group develops performance material, venues will be sought to showcase the work. No prerequisite required, but participation in both classes in encouraged.

PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITY!

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Participation in this fall’s “all-youth” production of the Washington Irving classic includes a small participation fee which helps defray production costs. Rehearsals are generally 2-3 times per week, plus occasional weekend rehearsals and every evening during production week.

Short plays are bridged by sing-a-longs and a bit of comedy by Jennifer Glenn’s highly trained 6th-8th grade actors. Designed primarily for the entertainment of the Pre-K through 2nd grade audience, productions this fall will be: The Frog Prince and Other Frog Tales and Songs in October and Raggedy Ann and Andy in December. Bring a lunch to rehearsal on performance days.

City Youth Theatre

This fall’s production — Relationships: The Good, the Bad, the Ugly and Everything in Between — is a partner program involving GaDuGi SafeCenter, the Lawrence Arts Center and others. Our mission is to focus community attention on young adults and their thoughts and feelings on pressing social issues such as violence prevention. Students will contribute as actors and writers.

Basic Theatre Shop and Stagehand Skills

Learn the fundamental skills needed to be a stagehand and set builder. We will cover stage equipment and procedures, as well as shop basics and proper use of tools.

Learn the tricks of creating stage props. Students in this practical class will create the props necessary to provide the illusions of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

Building Stock Scenery

Students of all ages (who have taken tech classes at the Arts Center, have extensive prior experience or instructor approval) will run the production — including operating the fly system, sound and lights, and putting finishing touches on the settings — of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, City Youth Theatre’s Relationships, and A Kansas Nutcracker.

Hey, 3rd-8th graders: Join one of the Kansas City area’s most frequently booked actresses as she shares tips on auditioning for commercial, television and film roles. Jeanne teaches regularly in Kansas City. For this class, she will bring in real scripts that have been filled in the Kansas City area. Students will end up with a tape, and a composite tape will be shared with Kansas City area casting agent Heather Laird and the Talent Unlimited Agency.

You’re going to love our new digital media lab and the new digital arts classes it makes possible. We’re very pleased to introduce our digital arts program, made possible by our new digital media lab. We have 10 — count ’em, 10! — 24-inch iMacs and a slew of creative software. Many, many thanks to The Francis Families Foundation, Hallmark Cards, Hill’s Pet Nutrition, The William T. Kemper Foundation, the Ethel & Raymond F. Rice Foundation, and generous individuals in the Lawrence community.

Filmmaking 1: The Basics

Looking for basic instruction in technical aspects of filmmaking? Camera work: Learn about mise-en-scene, long take and perspective; framing, shots and camera movement; Lighting: explore styles; experiment with back, main and fill lighting; Sound: experiment with microphones and create sound effects, discuss classical versus alternative work.

Filmmaking 2: Putting it Together

Looking for more intensive instruction on creating a short film or documentary? This is a good class for those with ideas, some footage or film in the works and goals of creating a short project. Workshop with others wanting to create their own project. Share your ideas and learn about telling your story and screenwriting. Create storyboards, talk about shots needed for your project including location, b-roll, all the aspects of planning your production, working on storytelling and screenwriting. Class will include watching and discussing film clips, experimenting with LAC cameras and equipment.

Dramatic Writing Tuesday Breakfast Club
Ric Averill
Join published playwright and produced screenwriter Ric Averill for four bi-weekly sessions of sharing and exploring both plays and screenplays. Students will read from their own and fellow students’ work. Ric will lead discussion and talk about techniques, forms, style and the structure of story in action. The class may divide at times between more experienced and less experienced writers for different types of exercises. Bring your own breakfast snack; coffee and juice will be provided.

Editing Lab
