Each of the Giving Circles is named after a person or place that has been essential to the arts in the Lawrence community. Because of their significant impact the Lawrence Arts Center is excited to honor them in this way.
Bill Bracker was a professor of Ceramic Design at the University of Kansas. He designed a portable Raku Kiln using ceramic fiber, an innovative new product for that time.
Langston Hughes spent much of his childhood in Lawrence, where he developed his love of reading. During his time in Lawrence he was a frequent visitor to the Lawrence Public Library at 9th and Vermont, the first home of the Arts Center. His writing centered on racial themes such as pride in blackness, democracy and patriotism. Hughes received many awards, fellowships and honorary degrees. He taught creative writing at two universities and his plays were produced on four continents. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and to the National Institute of Arts and Letters.
John Talleur began the printmaking program at KU and donated his prints to the Arts Center to start a printmaking studio. Many of his etchings and paintings have been displayed at KU and the Arts Center as well as around the United States and abroad.
Raymond Eastwood began painting at the age of 14. He trained with the Arts Students League in New York City and at Yale. From 1922 until 1968 he was a professor of drawing and painting at KU and served 16 of those years as department chair. Eastwood died in 1987 at the age of 99. After the death of his widow, his paintings were donated to the Lawrence Arts Center, which continues to exhibit his work.
Elizabeth Layton began drawing at the age of 68 and her pictures reflected important issues including homelessness and ageism. Layton donated her major drawings to the Lawrence Arts Center, which continues to show the works throughout the country and abroad. Her pictures have been displayed by the Museum of Modern Art, the National Museum of Women in Art and the Smithsonian.
Carnegie Library has been used for education in Lawrence since the beginning of the twentieth century. The library was donated by Andrew Carnegie and given to the local government to be used as a library. In 1974 it was adapted for the use of the Lawrence Arts Center and in 1975 it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
